Do more of these things to get digital moving in your business
Mark Paton (Client Partner) recognises trends in clients' approach to digital

Otherwise called “rolling with the punches and being nimble”

The economy has been a turbulent place for the past few years. This has made tracking what customers want even harder to gauge. We come across a lot of digital transformation projects and programmes that are struggling to meet or their targets or have lost track of the targets which may have moved whilst the programme is in flight. Many recent surveys show and our experience supports the concept that the companies that are working best in this space share a few common practices:

  • Clients and staff members are a core focus of how the changes will make things better. The client angle seems obvious but the staff one is also interesting. Team members that can access information more easily and perform tasks on behalf of customers more efficiently can make a huge difference to attracting and retaining customers

  • A very clear “visionary” type message from senior leaders helps keep digital on track. The leaders who don’t put this in to the “too techie” box are enjoying the best results.

  • Set-backs, challenges and changes of direction are to be expected and embraced. Digital is a new world and needs an open mind from Sponsors, Boards and everyone involved. This skill set is new and needs to be trained and encouraged.

  • The most successful businesses we see are realising that digital may well help them broaden the range of services they provide. For example, a large retail bank has entered a range of different industries, such as transportation (ride sharing), content distribution (music and TV), e-health and retail marketplace just to name a few.

  • The first deputy CEO was in charge of this transformation and built a team that contained individuals with strong innovation capabilities, which tested and built each new business. If you become good at digital the world can really open up either directly or through collaborations
